Cook County Property Tax Exemption Guides
An exemption lowers the value your tax rate is applied to. Most Cook County homeowners qualify for the Homeowner Exemption, and seniors can add the Senior Exemption and, with a household income under the state limit, the Senior Freeze. The Homeowner and Senior Exemptions renew on their own once granted; the Senior Freeze must be applied for every year. If an exemption is missing from a past bill, a Certificate of Error can still correct it. These guides cover each exemption, who qualifies, how to apply, and how an exemption and an appeal work together.
